Potential trouble with ERAS

September 26, 2011

An IMG and good friend who is applying this year sent me the following message:

“There was a problem with the ERAS application. The USMLE transcript was wrongly transmitted to some programs. So programs have received some other candidates transcript. Some programs did not receive my application at all. Of the programs I had applied this has happened to nearly one-quarter of the programs. I spoke in detail with ERAS who are working on rectifying this mistake. I hope this will be rectified soon. I hope this does not have a negative effect.”

No, it should not have an effect except on my friends psyche!  What a terrible potential mistake as my friend is a terrific candidate.  I am glad that he caught it in time as it sounds like there may have been several individuals with application mixups.

Programs evaluate candidates in bunches according to their schedules so don’t be surprised if programs send out interviews in bunches.  Information can be downloaded from ERAS anytime after September 1 but most programs start after September 15.  Some programs download information in late October.  Every program is different.  If you are a terrific candidate and have not gotten interviews yet you may want to check the status of your application.
